The Instant Composer
This is a new translation of Gradus ad Parnassum by Johann Joseph Fux. Originally published in 1725, it's the book that trained Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and many other distinguished, successful composers. Fux's training goal was to teach the student how to write in each mode up to three-part counterpoint. This PDF edition of The Instant Composer: Counterpoint by Fux includes a Music Basics section so that students with no chord scale background can catch up quickly. A supporting video course is also available. If you want to learn counterpoint, this is the recommended place to start.
