What’s Inside
“What passages of Scripture shall guide our national policy?” is the question asked by U.S. Senator Barack Obama at the Sojourner’s/Call to Renewal Conference in 2006 where he spoke on The Role of Religion in Politics Today.

To answer that question, another must asked. Was there any leader at any time who guided national policy by Scripture and do we have a record of it?

Fortunately, there is one, although he’s rarely thought of in contemporary circles as a political leader. In fact, you might even get a savvy political crowd giggling by the mere mentioning of his name.

That’s because the man most capable to answer Senator Obama’s question is Moses. And we have a record of his experience in his first person account in Deuteronomy (the last book of the Torah) which is actually a series of farewell addresses. For Lessons In Governing: The Farewell Addresses of Moses, Deuteronomy has been newly translated into contemporary English from the Septuagint, the 285BC Greek translation of the oldest known Hebrew manuscripts in existence, by Andy Gaus, the noted translator of The Unvarnished New Testament.

Moses is the one man who can genuinely respond to the question because he guided national policy by Torah while under The Theocracy where God, not an earthly monarch, was king.

That Moses lead in a theocracy where YHWH was king of a nation with a geographic territory affords us a practical working view of God’s concept of government in action for a 425-year period from 1446BC (the approximate date of the Exodus) to approximately 1021BC (when Saul ben Kish became the first human monarch of Israel).

In summary, under The Theocracy with Torah as the domestic policy of Israel, God’s plan called for limited government, no taxes, encouraged entrepreneurship, established fair laws, a volunteer judiciary with advisors, a volunteer militia, a national dietary plan, labor laws and a national vacation schedule, monetary policy, sanctuary cities, a common language, immigration policy, helping the poor, and much more.

You’ll be happily surprised to discover that God’s political agenda is much more broad than what you may have heard.

Lessons In Governing: The Farewell Addresses of Moses is in three parts.

Part 1 is Andy Gaus’ lively contemporary translation which turns Deuteronomy into a lively page turner.
‘
Part 2 is commentary by Peter Lawrence Alexander which steps you through the domestic policy found in Torah

Part 3 contains a collection of Farewell Addresses by former American presidents.

To read practical answers to Barack Obama’s question, Lessons In Governing: The Farewell Addresses of Moses is a must read for voters, political leaders, and Christians in any country.

Reviews

Martha Hicks, DMA
Professor of Music and Coordinator of Church Music Studies
Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, MO.

At a time when the term “worship leader” means something different to every congregation, William L. Hooper’s Worship Leadership for Worship Leaders,Vol. 1: Developing Skills for effective Leadership attempts to define and clarify the roles of music leadership in the Twenty-first Century church. Hooper effectively rejects the ill-conceived idea of many church leaders that the only responsibility of the worship leader is to provide music and leadership at the worship hour on Sunday.

The author does not provide a “how-to-lead-worship” book, nor is the volume an “everything-you-need-to-know” resource; rather, Hooper leads the reader through a thoughtful process of discovering the “what” of worship leadership. From a foundation of philosophy and theology of worship and music ministry, the author encourages the reader to examine his/her own strengths and weaknesses as a musician and as a minister. As the discussion provides opportunity for the reader to acknowledge skills that he/she needs to develop, the author suggests resources to meet those needs.

Hooper never makes a judgment on any particular style of music or worship, yet the worship leader is called on to judge individual pieces of music in order to offer only the most excellent gifts to God in worship. At the same time, Hooper stands firm on the issue of the worship leader’s responsibilities beyond the worship hour. The responsibilities of ministry and music education cannot be overlooked if the church is to have adequate and proper leadership for the future.

One of the great strengths of the book is the chapter entitled “You and Your Culture.”Again, the author does not tell the reader what to think.Instead, he offers guidance for responding to culture in a biblical and Christ-like manner.

This volume should be required reading not only for music leadership in the church, but especially for pastors. The future church cannot be to this culture what we are called to be unless we realize the multiple facets of ministry through music that go far beyond choosing and leading songs for worship.Hooper unapologetically raises the banner of excellence as the standard for worship leadership in today’s (and tomorrow’s) church.”

Worship Leadership for Worship Leaders offers wise advice in concise form about a wide range of essential issues in the practice of worship leadership. It calls for mature faith, theological discernment, and a warm and passionate heart for ministry–each essential components of effective ministry. Consider studying this book with a group of both veteran and beginning leaders in your area.

The Author who wrote Worship Leadership For Worship Leaders
Worship Leadership For Worship Leaders: Developing Skills For Effective Leadership, is the first in a series of practical training guides written by award winning composer Bill Hooper. Bill has a practical background in arranging and composing (from Stan Kenton to Stravinsky), conducting, counseling, missionary work in Zambia, and being a senior pastor. His music has been published by Broadman Press, Concordia, Carl Fischer, and Word Music. In 1973 he won the Delius Composition Competition and in 1974 he won the New Times Composition Competition.

With this broad range of practical experience, Bill Hooper is well qualified to create the Alexander Publishing Worship Leader Training Series.

REVIEWS

Worship Leader Magazine (March/April 2008)
Writing & Performing Christian Music is a book for the local worship leader, because you aren’t a professional recording artist (and that’s a good thing). But even industry heavy-hitters would benefit from reading a commentary on worship songwriting, and its importance in the Church. The book is comprehensive, covering everything from basic performance techniques to the biblical intentions of music. But instead of focusing on rhyming patterns and rhythm, Alexander provides biblical examples of how God wants to be praised. It’s a refreshing perspective. One chapter includes over 20 types of worship songs found in the Bible and how they can be adapted into modern contexts. Another has Biblical translations for every possible word pertaining to praise and worship. Peter Alexander tackles worship songwriting from the ground-up, providing the Biblical building blocks for worship leading.

The idea for the book emerged from Alexander’s own pursuit of knowledge regarding all things praise. It’s this question-and-answer approach that makes Writing & Performing Christian Music so accessible –you’re engaged in the worship dialogue. The book is interactive with instructions for applying and connecting with each of the topics fully. Writing & Performing Christian Music is the perfect read for both aspiring songwriter and seasoned worship leader; it provides a stimulating discussion that will undoubtedly mold your service of worship. So sit down and with a guitar and notebook, and prepare to be schooled.

Author, Praise With Understanding
I have found Peter Alexander’s teaching on music and worship to be thoroughly Biblical, inspiring and practical. Through his writing we are given a comprehensive look at what the scriptures (both Old and New Testament) have to say about music, song writing and worship. I heartily recommend this book to Pastors, worship leaders, musicians or anyone with a hunger to understand how to apply Biblical principles to modern day worship.

Gerrit Gustafson, songwriter (Only by Grace, Mighty is Our God), worship teacher (worshipschools.com) and author (The Adventure of Worship) Songwriters and artists thrive on creativity, and an essential component of creativity is being able to view what everyone else is looking at from a fresh perspective. For all of us who desperately need fresh, God-inspired perspective, Peter Alexander has done a great service. Addressing the very complex subject of Christian music, Peter Alexander combines a hefty analytical ability with the conviction that God is the ultimate Creator and the Bible, the narrative of His unfolding creativity, to offer a new way of looking at how Christians do music. Finding clues where you may think you have already explored, and connecting dots between what may still remain unconnected in your thinking, Peter gives a view of music that is driven by mission and sustained by character. Eager to have your own creativity stimulated? Open these pages.

If you’re stuck in the two-crayon world of hymns and choruses, you’re about to get a really big upgrade. This is a veritable encyclopedia on biblical songs: their origins, uses, and amazing potential for today’s worshiping church. Depth and faithfulness in technicolor. I’ve never seen anything like what’s been created here. May God bless this loving and comprehensive work as it resources the Davids of the new millennium.
