[RTAS, AU AND VST, *not yet 64-bit compatible on a Mac]

SPAT is the most advanced and sophisticated tool for room acoustics simulation and localization ever designed, managing both spatialization (source localization) and room acoustic simulation in a truly consistent and visually logical way.

Ircam Tools - SPAT - Reverb

SPAT introduces state of the art techniques for room acoustics simulation utilizing advanced perceptive models, concealing the complexity behind the actual algorithms, allowing for intuitive and accommodating user interaction capabilities.

Ircam Tools - SPAT - Sources View

Designed for surround and multi-channel use, SPAT presents the option to setup the output arrangements providing a variety of stereo and surround configurations, including subwoofer configuration. With eight input and output channels available in SPAT, configurations up to 7.1 and 8.0 are feasible.

    VERB: Room Acoustics and Reverberation
    [AU 32 & 64 bit | VST 32 & 64 bit | AAX Native 32 & 64 bit*]

VERB is an algorithmic room acoustics and reverberation processor. It has a modular construction, employing a recursive filtering reverb engine, reproducing and synthesizing the specific acoustical characteristics of any spatial sound environment.

Ircam Tools - VERB - Main View

Following a decade of intense research by the Acoustic and Cognitive Spaces Team at IRCAM, the IRCAM VERB introduce state of the art techniques for room acoustics simulation utilising advanced perceptive models, concealing the complexity behind the actual reverb algorithms and allowing for a flexible and intuitive experience for the user.

The IRCAM VERB provides eight input and output channels, presenting the option for reverberation processing in multi-channel and surround formats. A built in Input/Output (I/O) routing matrix provides instant flexibility when setting up the I/O in relation to the physical audio monitoring in the control room.

TRAX: The Next Generation Voice and Sonic Processing Tools
    [AU 32 & 64 bit | VST 32 & 64 bit | AAX Native 32 & 64 bit*]

A suite of three ingenious processors using advanced technology, developed during the last decade, by the sound analysis/synthesis team at IRCAM. These precision tools provide truly innovative signal transformation algorithms allowing the user to alter sound characteristics such as; pitch, timbre and duration, using a highly intuitive user interface.

Transformer - Real-time Voice and Sonic Modeling Processor
TRAX Transformer v3 is based on an augmented phase vocoder technology, and a cutting edge transformation algorithm, allowing for manipulating characteristic properties of a voice such as gender, age and breath, and on any other sound; expression, formant and pitch. These voice transformation algorithms have already been used, with great success, in international and French cinema productions. (Farinelli, Vatel, Tirésia, Les amours d'Astrée and Céladon).

Cross Synthesis - Spectral Envelope Morphing Processor
TRAX Cross Synthesis v3 utilizes a phase vocoder (the amplitude and the frequency/phase spectra), to morph the spectral characteristics of two sounds. The amplitude and frequency/phase spectra can be blended continuously and since the features that are used here are strongly nonlinear, the sound morphing is nonlinear as well, offering a way to create a wide range of new exciting and unusual sound effects.

Source Filter v3 - Enhanced Sound Filtering
TRAX Source Filter v3 is based on a signal model decomposing the signal into a time envelope describing the energy/loudness contour of the sound, and a spectral envelope describing the spectral color of the sound timbre. The energy contour and the spectral color of the source sound, can be continuously blended with the spectral color and energy contour of an arbitrary filtrating sound, allowing transformation that extend well beyond the more common source filter morphing effect.

    HEar: Binaural Encoding Tool
    [AU 32 & 64 bit | VST 32 & 64 bit | AAX Native 32 & 64 bit*]

HEar provides faithful reproduction of a stereo or surround mix with a pair of conventional stereo headphones. This allows monitoring a full surround mix in situations when a surround-capable environment is not available or practical. Use HEar to do precise checking of a mix with three different spaces. HEar is also very useful in a project studio whenever noise isolation is a concern since it helps achieve a more realistic sound environment.

HEar relies on HRTF filter measurements made using a KEMAR (Knowles Electronics Manikin For Acoustic Research) dummy head and torso simulation. This type of manikin was conceived during the 1970’s for conducting acoustics experiments using a model with anthropometric dimensions equivalent to that of an average human listener.

    Virtual speakers
The audio input is routed internally to virtual speakers, through a routing matrix. These represent the emulated loudpseaker setup configuration.

    HEar provides

  • Up to 8 channels Input/Output.
  • 64-bits internal floating point processing.
  • Sampling rate up to 384 kHz DXD (Pyramix DSP based).
  • Sampling rate up to 384 kHz for native (AU/RTAS/VST).
  • For use with headphones ONLY.

  • Ircam Tools - HEar Interface

Just insert HEar into your master out. Start playback. Now HEar your mix through virtual speakers routed to your headphones! Choose four listening spaces: neutral (no effect), Preset 1, Preset 2, or Preset 3. Each of the three presets are different spaces with subtle differences between them which enable you to compare your mix in different listening settings. Speaker width is set at 60 degrees. Speaker width lets you narrow or widen the stereo image. Settings that are less than 60 are wider while settings greater than 60 are closer together. You can even control the angle of listening. Default is 0 degrees which is the center. Left of 0 and you’re panning left while right of 0 you’re panning right.

VERB SESSION v3: The Ultimate Session Reverberation Processor
    [AU 32 & 64 bit | VST 32 & 64 bit | AAX Native 32 & 64 bit*]

VERB Session is based on the same fine technology used in the acclaimed IRCAM VERB algorithmic room acoustics and reverberation processor, with a modular construction employing a recursive filtering reverb engine, reproducing and synthesizing the specific acoustical characteristics of any spatial sound environment, developed utilizing the results of over a decade of intense research by the Acoustic and Cognitive Spaces Team at the IRCAM R&D centre in Paris.

Tailored for simplicity, with a fast paced workflow well-suited for situations where the perfect result has to be achieved within seconds, VERB Session presents the ultimate solution whether you are a seasoned session engineer or a demanding broadcast and post-production mixer.

Ircam Tools - VERB Session Interface

Excerpts from Sound on Sound August 2011
Summary - There are only a handful of plug‑in reverbs that are in the same league as Verb — perhaps the most obvious would be Lexicon’s PCM Native Reverb bundle — and I’ve never come across a plug‑in that can do what Spat can. There are, likewise, few direct alternatives to the Trax plug‑ins...

VERB: I certainly have no hesitation in recommending Verb, which is probably the best algorithmic reverb I’ve ever heard. Although it doesn’t offer the same diversity of reverb emulations as other high end plug-ins such as the Lexicon PCM Native Reverb bundle, for convincing recreations of real acoustic spaces it’s right at the head of the field.

SPAT: SPAT, meanwhile, takes those recreations and makes the whole experience of placing sources within them a thousand times more involving. There’s no doubting that it’s inexpensive, but I don’t know of anything else that can do what it does - you have to hear it to believe it.

TRAX: I think Flux have done a pretty good job of packaging up what is obviously a hugely complex piece of software into a comprehensible and intuitive user interface, but it’s still sometimes easier to make weird sounds than great ones. Nevertheless, TRAX Transformer in particular does some things that no other plug-in can, and will be a fertile source of inspiration for sound designers and mixers.

    Resident Advisor: Trax
Trax can be used on four types of material, Voice, Instrument, Music and Polyphonic, with Mode buttons at the top of the GUI clearly labelled to launch each of these algorithms. While its parameters can be applied to produce hugely interesting results to a wide range of sonic material, perhaps its most interesting use is as a vocal processor as it offers a different tool set from established vocal plug-ins such as Autotune and Melodyne to more fundamentally break sounds into component pieces and allow you to control and change these elements separately.

Reading this review, I'd forgive you for deciding that Trax is a specialist plug-in which will appeal to only those lucky enough to have more "fundamental" plug-in needs met and, to an extent, that's true. However, what can be achieved with this plug-in regularly shocks and excites and, if you're looking to bring radical and unique sound treatments to your productions, rather than being dismissed as a niche product, Trax deserves your attention. It's certainly fair to say that I've never really come across any plug-in which can warp sounds in quite this way and if you're someone who wants to stand out from the crowd in terms of the sounds you combine into finished mixes, Trax will provide some powerful ammunition.
